CHARMED

CHARMED, a unique collaboration between LIZWORKS and IPPOLITA, links together seven of the most important women artists working today: Laurie Simmons, Shirin Neshat, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman, Rachel Feinstein, Mickalene Thomas, and Wangechi Mutu. As conceived by Liz Swig, the project called upon each artist to create a charm, a small talisman that considers both her personal history and her artistic vision. Simmons was inspired by the charm bracelet worn by her mother, an object of childhood fascination and, later, the subject of creative inquiry. Mutu explored the duality of existing between two continents, two cultures, and two mindsets; Kruger’s straightforward coin meanwhile is evocative of iconic works like “Untitled” (I shop therefore I am), tackling art and commerce, desire and value, head on.
